Per Deadline, True Detective Season 5 has gotten a fresh update from Francesca Orsi, HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film. While speaking with the outlet at the Season 3 premiere of The White Lotus, Orsi confirmed that the new season will be heading to New York. While specific story details were not shared, Orsi also teased that the new season will be no less “powerful” than Night Country, which was developed by Issa Lopez — who’s also back to lead the charge on Season 5.
“It’s set in New York, in Jamaica Bay,” Orsi shared. “Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful.”

Orsi added, “I’m really excited about it. We have a small writers room going with Issa; she’s excited. We just gave notes on the first two episodes, the entire season. Honestly, I can’t wait for this to go. It’s all about casting and getting this ready.”
Filming is slated to start within the next few months with casting currently underway. Orsi confirmed that the season is expected to premiere in 2027, so there will be a bit of a wait before it arrives. For the fans of the series, it’s expected that there may be Easter eggs and references to Night Country, and perhaps other seasons of True Detective, given how there were several nods to other seasons in Night Country.
True Detective Is Heading to New York
Created by Nic Pizzolatto, True Detective debuted in 2014 with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson leading the cast. That season was set in Louisiana as authorities searched for a serial killer for nearly two decades. Season 2, starring Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams, saw cops investigate murders linked to a politician’s death in California. The third season moved the story to the Ozarks with Mahershala Ali playing an Arkansas State Police detective looking into a crime involving two missing children.
Previous seasons of True Detective are streaming on Max.
