Wednesday Season 1 was a major hit, propelling Jenna Ortega into worldwide stardom. Following the success of the first installment, Ortega will have a larger role in Season 2.
Ortega confirmed in 2023 that she will be a producer for the upcoming Wednesday Season 2. She explained that she wanted to have more authorship and have her voice heard, which the new title would allow. During a cover interview for The Cut, her Wednesday co-star Emma Myers further detailed how the new role would impact the rest of the cast.
“I feel a bit more empowered to speak my mind,” Ortega reiterated about her new role in the show. The actress previously addressed being involved in making sure the series honored her character in Season 1 as well.
Her being a boss was definitely for the benefit of the cast.
The show comes from Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, with the duo also sharing showrunner duties. They executive produce alongside Tim Burton, who directed several episodes. Ortega previously detailed how she made changes on the set and how she made sure her character’s actions were in line with her personality.
However, that will not only benefit Ortega and the protagonist. “Jenna looks out for us,” Myers said, who plays her optimistic, pink-loving roommate Enid. “She’s very collaborative. She always told me if there’s anything that I was uncomfortable with, anything I didn’t like, to come to her, and she’ll bring it to the table. Her being a boss was definitely for the benefit of the cast.“
Ortega further explained that for Season 2, her mornings would include meeting with Tim Burton and meeting with the writers. “Tim and I would talk with the writers, cross out lines, and they would supplement new ones.” She was also involved in the decisions over the prosthetics for the new villain, the casting calls, and the chemistry reads. “All the girls coming in were 8 to 16, and I can only imagine how scary that must’ve been. It’s a vulnerable age,” Ortega detailed.
Jenna Ortega Teased Enid’s Story Wednesday Season 2
Ortega was shot into stardom following the release of Wednesday, although she had had several high-profile roles by the time the series came out. Wednesday’s friendship with Enid was one of the highlights of Season 1, and the two actresses developed a strong relationship.
In a recent Variety feature on Emma Myers ahead of the release of her latest film, A Minecraft Movie, Ortega gushed over working with Myers: “I think Emma and I have a similar professional stance and understanding of our job, so anytime we shot together, we could trust things to go completely smoothly. She makes my job so much easier.”
She added, “Season 1, we hit the ground running; Wednesday is pulled in every direction, and with Emma, shooting was just perfect. We also bonded over uncomfortable skin-tight cat costumes and taking naps on the floor of our tent during long days. We just understand each other. She became a sister of mine very quickly.”
About Enid’s story in Season 2, who was revealed to be a werewolf, Ortega teased that Enid will be “a bit more of a badass this time around.”
Wednesday Season 2 is expected to premiere sometime this year on Netflix.
