Colorado – Authorities have finally revealed the cause of death in the tragic case of two young hunters found dead in the Rio Grande National Forest last week.
The victims, Andrew Porter of North Carolina and Ian Stasko of Utah, both 25, were reported missing after failing to return from an elk-hunting trip earlier this month. After days of intense searches involving helicopters, drones, tracking dogs, and rescue teams, their bodies were discovered about two miles from the trailhead where they had parked their truck.
Today, Conejos County Coroner Richard Martin confirmed that the official cause of death was a direct lightning strike. According to the preliminary report, both men appear to have died instantly from the powerful electric current. Their faces and hair showed signs of burns, and parts of their synthetic clothing had melted.
“This was a natural tragedy. There are no signs of foul play,” Martin stated, emphasizing that the deaths were accidental.
Experts warn that hunters and hikers should take extra precautions during Colorado’s late-summer thunderstorm season. “Avoid sheltering under tall trees and seek lower ground when storms approach,” officials advised.
Family members, devastated by the confirmation, described the two as “passionate outdoorsmen who loved adventure.” Candlelight vigils are now being planned in their hometowns to honor their memory.
